What's happening with TV?

We have been watching the same on TV for lots of days...

No matter the time I watch TV, whenever I switch it on, Letizia Ortiz or "La Pantoja" appear on it.

A beautiful story of love, for Mothers’ day

Unce upon a time there was a woman that was angry because her daughter, who was 5 years old, had wasted a roll of paper wraping (envolviendo) a box.

The next day, the daugther gave to her mother the box, and she told her : ¨This is for you,mum¨.

The mum was embarrased because her behaviour of the day before had been bad…

She unwrapped the present, and she saw that inside the box there wasn´t anything, and she told her daugther: ¨When you give a present, you must put something inside the box!¨

The little child, crying, told her: ¨Mum, the box isn´t empty, I put a lot of kisses for you inside the box¨

The mum, excited, hugged her daugther.

When the child grew, she moved very far to live in another house. Her mother, when she missed her, put her hand into the box and took out one imaginary kiss.

I'm a very weird (rara) person...I can't cook, but I love watching Arguiñano's programme and reading recipes (recetas) on magazines and books...I don't know why...Maybe I was a very good cook (cocinera) in other life, hehehe...I've thought we could write in here some easy recipes we know...Of course,you must write them in English!! Thanks in advance...

Cookies are my speciality (it's a joke)...

Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

½ tsp (teaspoon) baking soda

¾ tsp salt
½ cup butter

½ cup sugar

¼ cup brown sugar
1 egg

1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips

How to cook?

1. Sift (tamiza) together flour, baking soda (bicarbonato) and salt.
2. In a medium bowl, cream (bate) together butter and sugars.
3. Beat in (bate) egg and vanilla until fluffy (suave).
4. Stir in (remueve) dry ingredients.
5. Fold in (mézclalo con) chocolate chips (láminas).
6.Spread (extiende) butter out onto a pizza pan or similar sized heart-shaped cake or cookie pan.
7. Bake in preheated (precalentado) 350°F oven for 10 to 12 minutes.

THE BLACK SHEEP

Somebody is called the black sheep of the family when he/she is regarded as the odd one out (el bicho raro) , the one who brings disgrace to the rest. This expression comes from the fact that a black sheep is considered the outcast (marginado) of any flock (del resto del rebaño) , perhaps because its dark colour frightens the white sheep, but also because the black fleece (lana) cannot be sold, so the black sheep isn´t useful.

CROCODILE TEARS

In the past, it was often believed that crocodiles shed (derramaban) tears that slid down (deslizaban) into their mouths to moisten (humedecer) the food, making it easier to chew (masticar) and swallow(tragar). Nowadays, this expression is used when someone pretends to cry to manipulate the situation. If someone sheds crocodile tears, it means they look sad or upset but in fact they are not.

TO BURY THE HATCHET
This comes from the American custom of burying weapons (enterrar las armas) as a sign that hostilities between the American Indians and the White had ended. Nowadays, this idiom is used to refer to coming to peaceful terms with an opponent.

The lost knowledge

Making questions is the only possible way to find out if a person has knowledge about something. Furthermore when we don't know anything, we usually make questions. This video shows the reality of the statement: "I only know that I don't know anything at all".

Do you remember the song Gema and I chose to post on the voicemail? (If you don't, you can listen to it clicking "Susana & Gema" in the voicemail box placed on the right of the screen).

Taking a look at the blogosphere, I've found an amazing online exercise which works prepositions and verbs and shows a fun flash clip with the song.

In my opinion, it's a different way to practise English and improve our artistic skills by singing as if we were in a Karaoke...I hope you'll enjoy it!!

Do you usually complain about traffic jams??

Daytona beach, in Florida (USA), is one of the few places in the world where a family car can be driven on an ocean beach.

Today, cars can access to the beach.

Authorities have delivered traffic signs with speed limits or indicating the lanes (carriles) .
Of the 23 miles of beach, 16 miles allow driving and parking during the day and when the tide (marea) permits.

The sand becomes softer as one moves further inland from the waterline (a medida que nos alejamos de la orilla).

Unfortunately, some days the amount of people and cars is so high, that there's finally a real traffic jam (atasco) on the beach.

This is awesome, isn't it? After seeing this picture we should think twice before complaining about traffic jams in our cities!

A TRIP TO PARIS!!!!

Dear boys and girls!!! In a few days you are travelling to Andalusia, Valencia, Portugal and Paris. As I know most of our blog readers are going to Paris, this is a little quizz for them. As we cruise down (viajar a través) the highway of life we come across (cruzarse) many metaphorical destinations, some good some bad. " WATERMELON SNOW"

Have you ever hiked (ido de excursión) in a high mountain and noticed pinkish patches(manchas rosas) , or streaks of red, on the snowbanks?

This phenomenon is especially common during the summer months in the Sierra Nevada of California. The snow even has a fresh watermelon scent (olor) and is sometimes called "watermelon snow." ("nieve sandía"). It's amazing, but it has got a scientist explanation... The pink hue (tonalidad) is caused by an algae (alga) called “chlamydomonas nivalis”. People call it “Watermelon Snow” because it actually has a taste very similar to watermelon. The snow (and the algae) is safe to eat, atleast in reasonable quantities.

It is pretty unbelievable that snow would fall from the sky colored pink, and even more unbelievable that it would be safe to eat and taste like watermelon!!

Do you know where the words ¨Teddy Bear¨ and ¨Hot dog¨ come from?

TEDDY BEAR

This word refers to a soft stuffed (relleno) toy bear. It was named after the American president Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was Teddy. Among his hobbies, he liked hunting bears. It is said that he saved the life of a brown bear cub (cachorro). Then, this story appeared in a cartoon in the Washington Post. After that, stuffed bears were called teddy bears.

HOT DOG
The use of this word to mean sausage comes from the XIX century. Hot referred to the temperature of the sausage, of course. And dog may have been a reference to the alleged (presuntos) contents of the sausage. In 1845 there were many accusations against sausage makers of using dog meat to make the sausage (which was not true). The term became popular and was often used in newspapers, making it as common as it is today.

It has ocurred to me that we could insert a photo of any famous characters (actors, actresses, politicians, scientists,...) and the rest of people would have to add information about him/her. I think it may be a good idea to learn English and curiosities about some famous people in the world.

And the first one is...

His name is Brad Pitt.
He was born on 19th December, 1963.
His birthplace was Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Pitt grew up in Missouri and studied journalism in college before dropping out (abandonar, dejar) to become an actor.

I guess he is the sex symbol of our age, as it used to be Robert Redford or Paul Newman some years ago.I love his performances in films such as Telma & Louise, Seven, Legends of the Fall, Ocean's Eleven and Twelve and his last Babel.... (Gema, English teacher)

As yesterday was Valentine’s Day, we thought we should look at the language of love, in particular, the verbs and prepositions of love! Of course, you all know that when you are lucky enough to meet that special someone, you fall in love (enamorarse); if you are really lucky, you may fall in love at first sight (enamorarse a primera vista)! If you spend all of your time with your loved one, your friends may say that you are crazy about him or her (tú estas loco/a por él /ella). Take care here, because if you say that someone is driving you crazy (alguien te va a volver loco, en sentido negativo), it means they make you really annoyed and angry! This is not a good phrase to use about your sweetheart (cariño, amor)! Did you know that before you fall in love, you might fancy someone? (podría gustarte alguien)This means that you like them a lot, and would like to know them a lot better! If you manage to get to know (llegar a conocer/conocer) the person you admire, you can go out on a date (quedar), and hopefully, you will get on well (llevarse bien). But, you may just have a crush on him or her (perder la cabeza por él/ella), which means that your feelings may change in time… You can also fall out of love (dejar de amar, desenamorarse), and in this case, you may break up (romper), or split up with (separarse de) your beloved (amado/a) (who then becomes your ex). But this is not a very good topic for Valentine’s Day! So if you have had an argument and fallen out (discutir), today of all days (justo hoy), you should try to make up with (reconciliarse con) the person who is close to your heart. As the custom on Valentine’s Day is to send cards or flowers, you have the perfect excuse to forgive and forget (perdonar y olvidar) whatever happened in the past, and make a fresh start! (empezar de nuevo)

Last week there was a European blackout* for 5 minutes which , as it has been reported, didn't get enough success. This post tries to give a new chance to this initiative by calling all you up for a new BLACKOUT. This one will be tomorrow evening, 14 th February, from 22:55 to 23:00 h. Hi everybody!!

Many people think that downloading videos from Youtube isn't possible. Well, it is completely false. Downloading your favourite videos from Youtube is as easy as clicking this link : You have to install NOTHING in your computer, so don't worry!!

Instructions:
1. You have to enter in the page of the video you want to download. (the Youtube page)
2.Copy the direction which appears in the "address bar" = (barra de direcciones)
3.Now, click in the page: http://vixy.net/flv_converter
4. Put the direction you had copied in the box in yellow, where you can write.
5. Now you only have to click in "Start". Then, it will ask you where do you want the video to be saved.

I think this can be really useful, for example when we have to show videos in some subjects in the school, and we can't use the internet to show them. I hope this will help you.

I don't know if you have noticed... yesterday afternoon I was changing the look of our blog. I was surfing on the web and I discovered plenty of resources to make it more attractive. Now, I need your opinion...The blog is perhaps so decorated(loud colours, animated gifs,...) that users may get tired and give up participating.

Could you answer any of these questions in order to improve it? Thanks for your time in advance.

Do you like the new voicemail? I haven't used it yet because I haven't got a microphone. I'd really like one of you to try it, otherwise we will never know if it is a good accessory or, on the contrary, it only takes room on the main screen. The calendar: the previous one was very sad (do you remember its grey colour?). When I discovered the new one, I decided to insert it in our blog...but now I don't know if the constant movement of the pictures can make people feel visually tired.
